Transforming governance in India’s cities, towns and villages
The School of Governance (SoG) at the IIHS (Institution Deemed to be) University engages with the principles, approaches, and instruments by which Indian settlements are governed. It does so in order to transform the mandates, structures, processes, and workings of institutions at multiple scales, and their relationship with the market and other non-state institutions and citizens.
The SoG has a systemic orientation, interdisciplinary reach, and spatial focus, and leads new and cutting-edge work on urban governance. Drawing on and bringing together disciplines such as law, political science, and policy, the SoG will speak to issues of urban governance that are central to domestic and international urban policy.
The SoG supports the University’s Doctoral Programme, as well as its Master’s programmes through the Core Courses and a range of Elective Courses. Teaching at the SoG will locate urbanisation in India within a larger constitutional governance framework, to enable learners to understand how, by whom, and on what basis Indian cities and urban regions are governed and managed.
The SoG has contributed to teaching in the IIHS Urban Fellows Programme. In the Commons, it offered a module on Urban Governance, providing students with a foundational understanding of governance structures and processes shaping cities. Its Elective Courses (Urban Regulation; Governing Land; and Infrastructure and Services) explored critical policy and regulatory frameworks influencing urban development. The SoG also facilitated hands-on learning through research and practice-based Live Projects.
The SoG’s research focuses on policy and governance themes across a range of sectors, including urban governance, environmental governance, land administration, infrastructure systems, and municipal finances.
