Community Development

The SHD works towards strengthening local and community development, collective mobilisation, and decentralised urban governance by working with communities, neighbourhoods, social movements, workers organisations, and citizens’ collectives.

 

This work focuses on:

  • Community development efforts and citizen efforts in livelihoods, access to services, and neighbourhood upgrading.
  • Training community residents and development workers.
  • Creating collective spaces where stakeholders convene, dialogue, and exchange ideas.
  • Increasing quality and quantity of citizen participation in urban development.

Featured Projects

  • Housing Justice: A View from Indian cities (2021-present)This MOOC, produced by IIHS and available on Coursera, introduces approaches to housing justice, covering material, ecological, social, and spatial aspects. Rooted in Indian cities but with global relevance, it diagnoses housing justice and explores modes to advance it, including activism, public policy, and participatory governance. The course was initiated in 2021.
  • Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) consortium (2018-2022)This project explored how to tackle urban inequality by identifying local disparities and supporting context-specific, locally-led solutions. It focused on addressing the coexistence of wealth and poverty in cities and informing a range of stakeholders, from planners to community groups. The project was led by University College London (UCL) with partners in Peru, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, and Uganda, and funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)–Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).
  • Main Bhi Dilli campaign (2019-2021)This was a people’s campaign to make planning in Delhi more representative and inclusive by engaging citizens in the process of drafting the 2041 Master Plan. Researchers at IIHS were part of the campaign since its inception.
