Urban Ecology and Biodiversity

The SES monitors urban biodiversity, determining its vulnerability to urbanisation and climate change, and explores scientifically tested and ecologically just solutions for its conservation.

This work focuses on:

  • Monitoring and documenting urban biodiversity.
  • Impact of climate change and urbanisation on urban biodiversity.
  • Conservation of biodiversity, prioritising threatened species and ecosystems.
  • Informing, educating, and developing policy guidelines to scale-up conservation.
  • Implementing conservation action for biodiversity and ecosystem services hotspots.

Featured Projects

  • Applying a biodiversity lens for a sustainable city (2023-2024)The project integrated data-driven research along with citizen science initiatives to study the effects of urbanisation and climate change. The focus was on birds and butterflies, with the aim of predicting the vulnerability of these species to the effects of climate change and urbanisation. It was supported by Bangalore Sustainability Forum (BSF).
