Amir Bashir Bazaz has nearly 25 years of experience across a range of areas and themes. These include climate, environment, disaster risk, energy, and urban policy. He has also held multiple engineering roles in the early phases of his career. He works on issues at the intersection of economics, finance, climate change mitigation, disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, just energy transitions and sustainable development. His current research interests are on coupled urban and climate transitions, including unpacking the mechanics of long-term transition and transformation pathways.
Amir brings substantial experience on cities, their governance, and the underlying dynamics of market and non-market frameworks to the climate and disaster risk dynamics. He also brings in rich experience from his work on infrastructure and particularly, climate- and disaster-resilient infrastructure.
He was the National Expert Consultant to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, for the Second National Communication to the UNFCCC and worked extensively across multiple geographies, such as sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Amir was the Lead Author on the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) Flagship Report on Global Infrastructure Resilience 2023, Lead Author on the Green Climate Fund report on ‘Scaling up Climate Finance 2021’, Lead Author on the Summary for Urban Policymakers 2022, Contributing Author on the IPCC WG II Assessment Report 6 and IPCC 2018 Special Report on 1.5°C.
Amir holds a PhD in Management from IIM Ahmedabad, with a specialisation in Public Systems, and a first degree (with Honours) in Electrical Engineering from IIT Roorkee.
Amir has taught courses on Infrastructure Systems, Climate Policy, Energy Systems, Environmental Economics, and Development Economics across multiple postgraduate programmes and has mentored nearly 50 young researchers across multiple research and practice-based projects.
