IIHS Screens returns this September with Kottukkaali, a critically acclaimed Tamil film by P S Vinothraj that interrogates the tensions between tradition and freedom.

Kottukkaali tells the story of a 21-year-old girl whose family, enraged by her love for a boy from an oppressed caste, drags her to a distant shaman to undergo regressive rituals meant to erase her memories. Over the course of a single day, her fate becomes a stark reflection of the dangerous hold of caste, religion, and patriarchy on family life in India.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, P S Vinothraj, led by Nirupama Santhosh, Lead – IIHS Media Lab.
